Which apple is best for a juicy apple pie?
Grandma’s style apple pie is best made with sour apples, freshly harvested in your region. I prefer Boskop apples, but you can also try the following varieties:
- Idared: sweet, can be stored for a long time
- Elstar: very aromatic, slightly acidic
- Boskop: fruity and very aromatic
- Jonagold: sweet and at the same time slightly sour, very pretty apple with red color, the best choice if you want the cake to look nice and special.

You can bake the apple pie in any cake tin imaginable. Traditionally, however, it is baked in an apple pie springform pan.
You can also get your apple pie out of the oven quickly and onto the table on a baking tray. The apple pie sponge cake adapts to your springform pan. Try a fancy form, like a heart.
Juicy apple pie: Variations
This basic recipe contains cinnamon, but with a few simple changes you can quickly vary this apple pie and add other notes to the taste. If you don’t like cinnamon, just leave it out. Here are a few suggestions:
- Fresh mint: Mix some brown sugar with chopped mint and sprinkle over the cake after baking.
- Sweet vanilla: Vanilla brings out the sweetness of the apples.

- 1 โ lb apples
- 2 cups plain flour
- 7 oz butter unsalted
- 1 cups sugar
- 4 eggs medium sized
- 1 drop liquid vanilla extract
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 tablespoon milk
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon & sugar
- 2 teaspoons baking powder
- 1 pinch salt
Instructions
- Prepare the apples by peeling them, removing the core towards the stem, quartering them, and cutting them into thin slices. To prevent the slices from turning brown, you can place them in a bowl of water with a splash of white vinegar or sprinkle them with freshly squeezed lemon juice.
- In a mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour with baking powder. In a separate bowl, mix softened butter with granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, vanilla extract, and whole milk until the mixture becomes frothy. Gradually add the eggs, one at a time, stirring each one in before adding the next. Mix the ingredients until everything is smooth.
- Strain the apples and add them to the batter, stirring gently to incorporate them. Pour the mixture into a greased springform pan.
- The baking time of the pie depends on the amount of apples used. It usually takes anywhere from 40 to 60 minutes at 320ยฐF (160ยฐ C).
